The city of L'Aquila in Italy celebrates the 70th anniversary of Frida's death from 23 to 25 Oct.

22 October 2024

L'Aquila celebrates the multifaceted artist with a three-day event curated by Sabrina Giangrande.

The intention is to celebrate a great woman who has achieved an important place in history and who still today manages to influence the artistic, cultural, musical, literary and political world, but above all, it was intended to create a sort of ‘dialogue’ between the city of L'Aquila and the life of this artist.
Both have been wounded many times, holding desperately to life, have made resilience their mantra and both have been reborn to new life, becoming symbolically immortal. The one through her art full of allegories, sparkling colours, symbolism and messages and a lifestyle of optimism despite multiple misfortunes (not only physical), the other through the alternation over the centuries of mourning and hope, of collapse and stubborn reconstruction.
Frida Kahlo often painted her body in a raw and realistic way, showing scars, pain and vulnerability. This portrayal challenges conventional ideals of beauty, contributing to the narrative of an authentic and inclusive female corporeality.

The city of L'Aquila, repeatedly wounded and lacerated in its heart by earthquakes, could be compared to the same courageous resilience of a woman like Kahlo, who despite having lived a life severely scarred by serious and unfortunate issues, managed to emerge and become an immortal icon of contagious vitality. Her paintings, and her personal life, are an exploration of the often complex gender identity and the challenges women face in a patriarchal society.
Kahlo supported many women artists, helping to create ‘spaces of expression for women in the arts, paving the way for many female artists, showing that they can succeed in the art world despite challenges and discrimination’.

Prominent names from the world of journalism such as Yari Selvetella, journalist and writer for Rai Uno, and from the university world, Semiotics lecturer at the University of Teramo Marianna Boero, will be present.
