Perla Labarthe Álvarez, Director of the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City, recalled that Frida's husband, Diego Rivera, gave the Mexican people their old Mexico City home, known as the Blue House, so that a museum could be built in honor of Frida's life and work after her death in 1954. But for fifty years, a sizable amount of the painter's personal property—including 6,000 photos, a few drawings, letters, medications, and clothes—was stored in a bathroom.
Photographer Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, who curated the exhibition after this personal archive opened in 2003, chose 241 images to be shown. Nearly a million people have seen the collection in 20 cities since its 2009 debut in Mexico City.
