"VIVA LA VIDA, Frida Kahlo and Chavela Vargas" on stage in Massa Martana (PG), Italy on September 21

18 September 2024

As part of the multidisciplinary diffused festival "Storie dal centro" promoted by Teatro Belli in Rome, the show "VIVA LA VIDA, Frida Kahlo and Chavela Vargas", with Francesca Bianco and Eleonora Tosto, on guitar Matteo Bottini, directed by Carlo Emilio Lerici, will be staged on Sept. 21, at 9:30 p.m., at Teatro Comunale Consortium in Massa Martana (PG).

The show opens with Frida Kahlo's voice describing the love of her life, the painter Diego Rivera. A very rare recording, perhaps the only existing audio recording of the artist, which the Fonoteca Nacional del Mexico recovered and digitised in January 2019 and decided to make public in June 2020. The words are fragments of ‘Retrato de Diego’, a text Frida Kahlo wrote in 1949 for her husband. The audio dates from 1953-54.

If it is certain that the love story between Frida and Diego was intense and passionate, equally intense was the love and deep friendship that bound Frida Kahlo to the legendary Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. This is the starting point of the dramaturgy: an imaginary tale/dialogue between Frida Kahlo and Chavela Vargas, in a poetic and visionary journey that, interweaving music and theatre, leads into the lives of two of the most charismatic figures of Mexican culture.

Francesca Bianco, who gives voice to the painter, and Eleonora Tosto on vocals, who interprets the songs of Chavela Vargas, accompanied on guitar by Matteo Bottini, alternate in an exchange of emotions and dreamlike suggestions, in which art, music and life appear inseparable.
