After writing about the lives of iconic 20th century figures such as Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, writer Chiara Pasqualetti Johnson returns with a new volume dedicated to Frida Kahlo. "Frida. Woman, Artist, Icon" celebrates this extraordinary figure through over 100 images and an engaging account of her life and career.
Every detail of Frida's biography is narrated with depth and accompanied by images that capture Frida's immortal charm.
With her dramatic life and her way of approaching difficulties, Frida Kahlo was able to transform her experiences into an art form. Aware that she did not represent traditional beauty, she worked all her life on the construction of her image, ending up transforming her being ‘different’ into being ‘special’, inspiring millions of people.
The book therefore invites us to get to know the real Frida, going beyond public image and myth.
Pasqualetti Johnson's book allows us to discover Frida through shots taken by women photographers such as Imogen Cunningham, Lola Álvarez Bravo and Tina Modotti, as well as by the work of other artists such as Edward Weston and Nickolas Muray. These images reveal private moments in Frida's life: we see her painting, sharing moments of conviviality with friends, smoking in the garden or posing like a diva in her spectacular traditional clothes. Shots that immortalise a life lived intensely and at the same time help to fuel the imagination that still surrounds Frida today, putting her on a par with other great myths of our time such as Che Guevara or Marilyn Monroe.
