Frida Kahlo in the Ninfa Pema's work at the Panorama International Arts Festival 2024

31 July 2024

The theme of the Panorama International Arts Festival 2024 - organised by the Writers Capital International Foundation - is "Agni: The Element of Fire', which symbolises passion, transformation and resilience.

On July 31st Silla Maria Campanini, Global Coordinator of the Festival 2024, presented the Italian artist Ninfa Pema (with Albanian origins) and her work "FRI-DA" linking it to the Agni theme.
The work 'FRI-DA' is a medium-sized photographic manipulation that explores the dualism of women in contemporary society, symbolised by the iconic figure of Frida Kahlo.
The technique used interweaves visual elements to create an abstract illusion of the female gender, emphasising the complexity and multifaceted nature of the modern woman.
The central theme of the work is dualism, represented through the figure of Frida Kahlo, an icon of strength and vulnerability, of pain and beauty. Frida, with her deep red dress, embodies the fire of Agni, the Vedic god of fire, symbol of transformation, passion and purification. The red of her dress is not only a visual reminder, but a powerful symbol of the fiery passion and inner strength that characterise both Frida and the concept of Agni.

As in the mythological figure of Agni characterised by two heads, the work itself uses visual contrasts to emphasise this dualism: two intertwined Frida figures fighting against each other to distinguish themselves, a continuous challenge between happiness and disappointment, between passion and detachment.
The fiery red of Frida's Frida's mantle is juxtaposed against a darker background, creating a play of light and shadow that represents the coexistence of opposites such as light and darkness, life and death, strength and fragility.
On her head, Frida wears variegated flowers, representing the light and knowledge that Agni brings. Flowers, with their bright and varied colours, symbolise enlightenment and creativity, essential elements in Frida Kahlo's life and art.

The manual photographic editing adds a further layer of complexity, creating a visual effect that challenges perception and invites the viewer to reflect on the dual nature of femininity.
It is a tribute to the complexity of the modern woman and her ability to embody apparently irreconcilable opposites, creating a harmonious balance between strength and vulnerability, light and darkness.
