An art gallery gala in Kolkata, India, to celebrate Frida's 117th birthday

22 July 2024

On July 6, the 117th birthday of Frida Kahlo, artists reimagined her in oil, canvas, bronze, and clay at An art gallery gala in Kolkata,

Frida was attending a city art gallery bash wearing a traditional white Bengali saree with a red border. This was her way of paying homage to her Indigenous heritage, which she has always proudly flaunted. She appears to be riding a vivid yellow-black tiger in an alternate avatar with recognizable Maa Durga-style iconography.

No, it was a gala instead of a fancy dress party, where artists who were invited to honor Kahlo in oil, canvas, bronze, and clay imagined her. The majority of them were from Bengal, and they showered the Mexican artist with affection to the point where, at the end of the day, you could overlook their referring to her as just Frida Di.

Chitrakar has painted Frida Kahlo lying on the road after the crash between a tramcar and a bus.

Another painter from Chitrakar's village, Pingla, Layala, depicted Kahlo with her monkey and parrots. In some of her patachitras, she was also depicted riding a tiger, resembling Maa Durga.
