Mougins is a classic French Riviera destination, combining gastronomy, art, history, and culture in a charming environment. Many artists have been fascinated by the picturesque charm of this medieval village, which is nestled between the sea and the mountains.
Christian Levett founded the Mougins Museum of Classical Art in this very idyllic setting back in 2011. In just 12 years of operation, it rose to prominence as a well-liked cultural attraction, presenting his antiquities collection alongside works of art with classical influences. After nearly 30 years of collecting art, Levett, a former British investor who was passionate about both art and history, said in the summer of 2023, "After almost 30 years of collecting art, my tastes have evolved, and I think it's time for the museum to evolve as well."
The museum is now called FAMM (Female Artists of the Mougins Museum) and defines itself "An unparalleled museum in Europe that repositions women in art history" . It started displaying more than 80 international works on June 21, 2024, offering a singular exhibition of paintings, sculptures, photos, and drawings exclusively made by female artists, from Impressionist to contemporary. This show takes viewers on an exciting visual journey from visionary Impressionists to fearless Surrealists, via turbulent abstraction and audacious depictions of the human body, to the personal and unvarnished expressions of female artists of the twenty-first century.
In order to address historical disparities in the recognition and appreciation of female artists, FAMM is pleased to offer a dedicated platform for their exhibitions. With each artist adding to and changing the vast story of art history, the extraordinary artworks on exhibit give visitors a unique opportunity to investigate the universal essence of art.
Frida's work exhibited here is an orthopedic corset, where Kahlo painted a blood-red Hammer and Sickle expressing her lifelong political sympathies, and below, a developing foetus, a reminder of the still deeper insult of the accident – her inability to bear children. This is one of three plaster corsets painted by Kahlo, and the only one owned privately. The other two are in the collection of the Museo Frida Kahlo, Mexico City.
