The "Modern Mexico in the Gelman Santander Collection will showcase the 300-piece Gelman Collection, which includes 95 pieces of Mexican modern art. Some of these artefacts, such as Diego Rivera's 1943 Calla Lily Vendor and Frida Kahlo's 1943 Self Portrait as a Tehuana, were purchased by European immigrants Jacques and Natasha Gelman from the stars of their time.
A portion of Jacques and Natasha Gelman's most significant collection of contemporary Mexican art indeed will be on display and a major legal controversy is currently underway. The Spanish bank Santander is now in charge of this priceless collection's future. People in Mexico worry that these paintings, which are regarded as national treasures, might never be shown there again. The Defence of the Gelman Collection is a collective of the citizens who have filed a lawsuit. The agreement between Banco Santander and Mexico's National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), which permits the artworks to travel to Spain and subsequently to other European nations, was challenged by the collective in July. The group is worried that Banco Santander might buy the whole collection.
