“VIVA FRIDA” at MALBA in Buenos Aires for the museum 25th anniversary

20 September 2026 | 15 March 2027

"Viva Frida" is one of the most important exhibitions devoted to exploring the life, work, and identity of Frida Kahlo making its debut in South America as part of MALBA's 25th anniversary celebrations,

"Viva Frida", curated by Circe Henestrosa with the collaboration of Gannit Ankori, brings together more than 365 pieces that invite visitors to explore Frida's creative universe. These pieces include personal objects, paintings, photographs, letters and documents, besides a private collection of photographs.

One of the essential aspects of Viva Frida is its unique curatorial method. The showcase, created by Circe Henestrosa, who is an acclaimed Mexican fashion historian and researcher, provides a viewpoint that shifts away from the usual chronological layout of events. Rather, the exhibit investigates how Frida Kahlo utilized her attire and the items around her to shape and reveal her identity.

Thus, dresses, jewelry, accessories, and orthopedic corsets take on a deeper meaning. They are not just objects from the artist's personal life; they are instruments through which Kahlo constructed her own way of being seen. Traditional Mexican garments, modifications to her clothing, and elements connected to her body are part of a visual approach that linked directly to her self-portraits and the public persona she developed over her lifetime.

This viewpoint is further enriched by the involvement of Gannit Ankori, an art historian and one of the foremost authorities on Frida Kahlo's work. Her input expands the interpretation of the exhibit and enables a look at the artist's impact from modern viewpoints, exploring the connections among identity, body, culture, and representation.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the presence of pieces that the museum has conserved under the direction of its founder, Eduardo Costantini. Among them is "Diego and I" (1949), Frida's final bust self-portrait before she passed away, which set a world record at auction. It is accompanied by one of the most cherished pieces in the museum's permanent collection, "Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot" (1942).
