The exhibition features an extraordinary selection of photographs depicting Frida, captured by some of the most important photographers of the 20th century. A corpus of iconography that, in addition to documenting the public image and the body marked by suffering, restores the strength of her rebel spirit, the depth of her dialogue with the Mexican culture, and the creative potential of her artistic vision.
Through the photographs of Edward Weston, Nickolas Muray, Imogen Cunningham, Lucienne Bloch, Leo Matiz, Julien Levy, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Bernard Silberstein, and Gisław Freund, the exhibition offers a close-up and intimate look at Frida, highlighting her passions, fragility, and relationship with the world around her. To arricchire the espositivo process, there is a section devoted to documentary material, which helps to later contest the myth.
The exhibition is enriched by a section dedicated to documentary material, which helps to further contextualise the legend.
Of particular note is the work of the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide, who explored Frida’s world in a series created ‘in her absence’: the focus is on the bathroom of Casa Azul, which was reopened exceptionally by Diego Rivera in 2005, where the artist’s personal belongings continue to evoke her presence and memory.
‘Through My Eyes: Frida Kahlo and the Construction of Myth’ is more than just a photographic exhibition: it is a reflection on identity, self-representation and the construction of myth.
A moving journey that invites visitors to explore not only Frida Kahlo’s public image, but also her inner world, her vitality and the cultural legacy that continues to inspiregenerations.
The exhibition is produced by Navigare srl, in collaboration with Superstudio Più – MyOwnGallery, under the patronage of the City of Milan, the Mexican Embassy in Italy and the Mexican Consulate-General in Milan.
