"Diego Rivera and the Construction of Modern Art in Mexico in the 20th Century" is the largest exhibition of Mexican art in Europe in recent decades, and the first dedicated to Diego Rivera in Italy.
In addition to Diego Rivera, the significant presence of Frida Kahlo, José María Velasco, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, María Izquierdo, Tamayo, Lozano, Montenegro, Ruiz, Dr. Atl, Saturnino Herrán, and many others is also featured, including Tina Modotti with two evocative photographs of Diego Rivera at work.
Promoted by Roma Capitale, the Department of Culture, and the Capitoline Superintendency, the exhibition is produced in collaboration with the MetaMorfosi Cultural Association and the Kaluz Museum in Mexico City, with the patronage of INBAL, the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature of Mexico.
The exhibition is curated by Miguel Fernández Félix (director of the Kaluz Museum) and Alberto González Torres.
The exhibition highlights the effects of Rivera's 1921 three-month visit to Italy prior to his final return to Mexico. The Mexican muralist is portrayed in the retrospective as a pivotal figure in the avant-garde interactions between Mexico and Europe.
Through over 160 works, including paintings, drawings, photographs, and sketches from the most prestigious public museums and private collections, the exhibition highlights how international influences were absorbed and transformed to point out original cultural values.
Rivera and his Mexican contemporaries reinterpreted external elements from a national perspective, generating a locally rooted artistic production that gave rise to an art with its own identity. This capacity for assimilation and transformation illustrates Mexico's characteristic syncretism, where traditions, ruptures, and miscegenation interact to project an authentic and complex visual identity.
Innovative digital reconstructions will complete the exhibition.
