"Frida Kahlo. A Revolutionary Life" immersive exhibition in Verona, Italy

30 May 2026 | 11 October 2026

There is no spoken dialogue or text in "Frida Kahlo. A Revolutionary Life"; instead, the story is told solely through the use of sound and imagery.

It is a visual opera honoring Frida Kahlo's life and contributions, a light and sound show with enormous projections of some of Frida Kahlo's most striking pieces. During the 45-minute journey a series of kinetic frescoes move and breathe around the visitor, accompanied by a carefully chosen soundtrack that includes both modern tributes and folk tunes.

Produced by Massimiliano Siccardi, Luca Longobardi and Vittorio Guidotti, this work is an ideal conclusion for Siccardi and Longobardi, creators who have redefined the concept of immersive art worldwide, a trilogy dedicated to the artists who, in their view, have most marked the turning point in contemporary sensibilities: Van Gogh, Klimt and, indeed, Frida Kahlo.
This journey into Frida's cosmos is conceived as a ‘total work’ in which music, image and word develop a grand visual fresco, ideally reminiscent of the very mode of expression of the man who most influenced her life: Diego Rivera.

The images, created using mixed media, range from hand-drawn sketches to artificial intelligence, forming an extraordinary visual poem that unfolds into a powerful kinetic fresco, capable of conveying to the public that blend of folk art, surrealism, mysticism and magical realism which characterise the creative wellspring from which Frida Kahlo drew inspiration, as vividly captured in her incredible and revealing series of self-portraits.
Not, therefore, a chronological exhibition of the various styles the artist explored during her lifetime, but a fusion of elements that are only apparently contradictory and which, in reality, illuminate one another. The narrative guides the audience through every stage of Kahlo’s life, torn apart by pain, bursting with passion and fiery colour. A life lived as a true tribute to poetry, politics, suffering and love, all embraced and welcomed without hesitation to become an essential part of her overwhelming charm.

It's a journey in thirteen stages, one for each month of the lunar calendar characteristic of matriarchal civilisations, recounting the life and imagination of an artist who has become a contemporary pop icon. A journey punctuated by music – featuring the works of Bach, Edith Piaf, Violeta Parra and many others, alongside original compositions by Luca Longobardi – in which the images come to life, transporting the audience into a dreamlike realm that reveals the creative power of a talent who has explored, and brought together, the folkloric, emotional and political dimensions of her world.

The experience begins with *Journey into the Reflected World*, in which Frida’s words are interpreted: “Life flows and opens paths that are not travelled in vain”, before continuing *Through the City* and opening up to *The Encounter*, Diego’s world.

In *A Revealing Breath*, we relive the imaginative fantasy with which Frida, as a child confined to bed by polio, opened a ‘door’ onto the outside world by breathing on the window pane and tracing a passageway on it with her finger, whilst in *Roots* (ancient civilisations) one traverses the universe of archetypal symbols that animate Frida’s art, culminating in the union of masculine and feminine in *Marriage* (the dressing of the Goddess). Then come the *Revolution* and the contradictory North American experience of Los Estados Unidos.

The blinding gaze precedes, with its light, the world of darkness in *The Dance of Death* (dreams and nightmares), which together become *A Life on Stage. The Dream of the Wounded Deer* (lost in her own world) foreshadows, as an omen of death, perhaps the most significant episode in Kahlo’s life, ultimately depicted in *Frida Lives* (the tram), the final stage of this ideal lunar year which, in its end, determines its own beginning: a near-fatal accident that, by shattering an existence, unleashes a powerful creative surge.

Frida Kahlo’s granddaughters, Mara Romeo Kahlo and Mara de Anda, were involved in organising “Frida Kahlo. A Revolutionary Life”. In this interview with ArtTribune, they talk about Frida’s legacy and the significance of this project.
