"Diaries of Frida Kahlo" at the Atatürk Cultural Center in Istanbul, Turkey

23 January 2025 | 23 March 2025

This exhibition, inspired by the diaries of Mexican artist Frida's diaries, brings her personal writings and artwork to life through a combination of digital and physical storytelling.

Co-curated by Ayşe Demirci and Dilay Duman and directed by Cengiz Ayyıldız and Koray Özdemir, the exhibition blends digital and physical components to offer a thorough examination of Kahlo's life.  The exhibition presents an original perspective by delving into her personal challenges and experiences in addition to her artistic endeavors.

Cengiz Ayyıldız stressed in an interview with Anadolu Agency (AA) that the exhibition tells Kahlo's life story in addition to presenting her artwork. He clarified that the exhibition offers a comprehensive display of her diaries, allowing viewers to establish a more intimate connection with the artist. As stated byAyyıldız, the exhibition includes every page of Kahlo's diaries. "Visitors will encounter 52 different pages, each telling a unique story,"  he stated. Kahlo's diaries are infused with her artistic vision rather than being typical diary entries. Every page is full with detailed illustrations and thought-provoking stories that capture important times, persons, and occasions in her life. Because of this, the exhibition offers a unique chance to see all of Kahlo's innermost thoughts and reflections.

Although Kahlo's life has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, Ayyıldız pointed out that this one is unique because it combines digital and physical media and emphasizes her diaries. He also emphasized the use of cutting-edge technology, including data sculptures made by Turkish artists based on themes found in Kahlo's diaries and digital sculptures produced by artificial intelligence.

The question, "What would Frida look like if she were alive today?" is examined in one section of the exhibition. The exhibit offers a hypothetical look at how Kahlo might look and dress in the present day using artificial intelligence and four distinct algorithms.
Modern technology is also incorporated into the exhibition, enabling visitors to interact creatively with Kahlo's world through digital installations and AI-driven interactive experiences. Visitors are given the opportunity to see her world through the prism of modern technology, even though she passed away 70 years ago.

The Frida Kahlo Corporation, which owns the global license for her legacy, gave its approval to every piece in the show, that met art lovers for the first time in Turkey on September 28, 2023 at the Istanbul Grand Pera Historical Building, as part of the Istanbul Culture Route Festival.
